Fantasy chat bot
NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders." data-reactid="15"During Microsoft (MSFT) CEO Satya Nadella’s keynote address at the company’s Ignite cloud conference on Monday, he brought out a number of Microsoft employees to demo various features. But for a demo of Microsoft’s chat-bot tools for developers, Nadella brought out … Microsoft first unveiled its Microsoft Bot Framework in March, at its Build developer conference. The goal is that companies will use the framework to build chat bots both for their own internal purposes and for their customers’ needs.Bot technology, Nadella said, is a “convenient way to interact with your information, your data, your process.” But building a bot still isn’t simple—it requires a “conversational understanding.” It needs to be able “to parse phrases.”Nadella says companies like discount travel app Hipmunk, ticketing site Stub Hub, and media photo repository Getty Images have all built bots using the Microsoft framework already.I recently built a chatbot for Facebook Messenger, and these are six things I learned from using other bots in research, building the bot and watching people interact with it.A Messenger Adventure is a text adventure similar (albeit much smaller) to Zork and Adventure, two classic text adventures that take place in fantasy realms. One experience in particular was a chatbot called “Solstice Siena.” While there were many routes that could have been chosen to showcase this technology, we set our sights on killing the typical, boring conference app in favor of smarter, conversational interfaces in Siena..Rather than asking attendees to download another app for a one-off event, Siena was served up to conference attendees through Facebook Messenger, the largest and most ubiquitous chat channel in the world.
Working in conjunction with attendees’ beacons and the Solstice location services platform, Siena was able to identify the location of a given attendee at any moment, and used this information to provide a more personal experience. The modern messaging tools that chatbots run on offer much more ways to interact compared to what previous incarnations of chatbots had, such as those used on IRC or AIM.Much advise on building chatbots that’s out there quietly assumes that all chatbots are just text-in-text-out, which doesn’t match with the platforms they are on.It’s a small campaign that you can finish in 15 minutes or so. Most of these are specifically for Facebook Messenger, though there are general points to be found too.My bot initially only responded to text inputs, but it turns out that quite a few people actually send a like as the first message.
